Fresh water rig 5 – Single paternoster, light

Northern target species

Tarpon, perch, barramundi, catfish, sooty grunter, and most of the smaller, northern fresh water species.

Southern target species

Trout, perch, small cod, eel, catfish and most of the smaller, southern fresh water species.

Popular baits

Freshwater shrimp, prawns or cherubin, cut fish strips or cubes, worms, insects, fresh water crayfish flesh and red meat.

Fishing method

The light Paternoster rig is designed to be fished whilst holding onto the fishing outfit and is extremely productive for casting long distance or fishing deeper water for a variety of smaller fresh water species.  Simply cast the baited rig out into the desired location, wait until it settles onto the sea floor and wait for a bite. Always remember to wait until the fish has your bait securely before striking! Most light rigs should be constructed with as little terminal tackle as possible, making them less visible to fish.

Terminal tackle used

Swivel – Small size 2 to medium sized 8 rolling, barrel or crane.

Hook – Small sized 8 to medium sized 2/0 suicide, ganged, long shank or bait holder.

Leader – Nylon or fluoro carbon 10 – 30lb breaking strain.

Sinker – As light as conditions allow size 1 – 4 star, spoon, snapper or tear drop.

Casting distance

20 – 80 meters, this rig casts best with smaller, lighter baits.
