Northern target species

This rig is generally used to target smaller, southern estuary species but may also be used in northern waters to target small bait fish and gar fish.

Southern target species

Bream, drummer, trevally, tarwhine, leather jacket, luderick, gar fish, bait fish and most of the mid ranged estuarine species.

Popular baits

Freshly cut bait fish and peeled prawn pieces and live maggots.

Fishing method

The floating berley cage rig is designed to target a variety of smaller estuarine species located close to the surface or in shallow waters and is a great way to gather bait fish such as herring and gar fish. Always remember to wait until the fish has your bait securely before striking!

Terminal tackle used

Swivel – Small sized 8 – 12  rolling, barrel or crane.

Hooks – Small sized 12 – 6 bait holder, long shank or suicide.

Leader – Nylon or fluoro carbon  6 – 10lb breaking strain.

Floating berley cage – To attract and hold target species in your fishing area.

Casting distance

0 – 50 meters, this rig works best with smaller, fresher baits.
