Fresh water rig 10 – Snag proof

Northern target species

Barramundi, mangrove jack, sooty grunter, catfish and most of the mid sized, northern freshwater species.

Southern target species

Trout, perch, cod, eel, catfish and most of the mid sized, southern freshwater species.

Popular baits

Live shrimp, cherubin and small live or dead, whole or cut bait fish all make excellent baits for this rig.

Fishing method

The snag proof rig is designed for targeting a variety of mid ranged species in rugged, snaggy environments. The ball sinker running directly onto the hook can be used to knock the hook free upon snagging with a few quick flicks of the rod tip. A great rig for fishing rough ground right at your feet! This rig is also very popular with northern Barramundi anglers! Always remember to wait until the fish has your bait securely before striking!

Terminal tackle used

Swivel – Medium sized 2 rolling, barrel or crane.

Hook – Medium size 4 to large sized 8/0 suicide, bait holder or chemically sharpened, thick gauge such as Mustad big gun‘s.

Leader – Nylon or fluoro carbon 12 – 80lb breaking strain.

Sinker – As light as conditions allow size 1 – 6 ball.

Casting distance

0 – 20 meters, this rig works best when dropped straight down rather than cast a long way.
