Estuary rig 18 – Northern

Northern target species

Bream, flathead, trevally, barramundi, salmon, mangrove jack, estuary cod, queen fish, cat fish, mulloway and most northern estuary species.

Popular baits

Freshly cut bait fish strips, whole, live bait fish and prawns.

Fishing method

The northern estuary rig is designed for targeting a variety of medium to large species in rugged, northern environments. The ball sinker running directly onto the loop knot can be used to knock the hook free upon snagging with a few quick flicks of the rod tip. A great rig for fishing rough ground right at your feet! This rig is also very popular with northern Barramundi anglers! Always remember to wait until the fish has your bait securely before striking!

Terminal tackle used

Hook – Medium to large sized 3/0 – 9/0 thick gauge or suicide.

Leader – Nylon or fluoro carbon  40 – 100lb breaking strain.

Sinker – Size 1 – 6 ball.

Casting distance

0 – 20 meters, this rig works best with smaller, fresher baits.
