Northern target species

This rig is generally used to target smaller, southern estuary species but may also be used in northern waters to target small bait fish and gar fish.

Southern target species

Bream, drummer, trevally, tarwhine, leather jacket, luderick, gar fish, bait fish and most of the mid ranged estuarine species.

Popular baits

Freshly cut bait fish and peeled prawn pieces and live maggots.

Fishing method

The sinking berley cage rig is designed to target a variety of smaller estuarine species from surface to mid water and is a great way to target bait fish such as herring and gar fish. Always remember to wait until the fish has your bait securely before striking!

Terminal tackle used

Swivel РSmall sized 8 Р12  rolling, barrel or crane.

Hooks – Small sized 12 – 6 bait holder, long shank or suicide.

Leader РNylon or fluoro carbon  6 Р10lb breaking strain.

Sinking berley cage – To attract and hold target species in your fishing area.

Casting distance

0 – 50 meters, this rig works best with smaller, fresher baits.
