Northern target species

This rig is generally used to target smaller, southern  species but may also be used in northern waters to target small bait fish and gar fish.

Southern target species

Bream, drummer, trevally, tarwhine, leather jacket, luderick, gar fish, bait fish and most of the smaller beach and rock species.

Popular baits

Freshly cut bait fish, peeled prawn pieces and live maggots.

Fishing method

The sinking berley cage rig is designed to target a variety of smaller beach and rock species from surface to mid water and is a great way to target smaller fish such as yellow tail/blue mackerel, herring and gar fish. Always remember to wait until the fish has your bait securely before striking!

Terminal tackle used

Swivel – Small sized 8 – 12  rolling, barrel or crane.

Hooks – Small sized 12 – 6 bait holder, long shank or suicide.

Leader – Nylon or fluoro carbon  6 – 10lb breaking strain.

Sinking berley cage – To attract and hold target species in your fishing area.

Casting distance

0 – 50 meters, this rig works best with smaller, fresher baits.
