Popular baits

Fresh cut, whole or live bait fish such as mullet, mackerel, tailor, salmon, sting ray and large, fresh fish heads all make excellent baits for this rig.

Fishing method

The large shark rig is designed to target larger sharks to 250kg. Most of the larger shark species are excellent sport but poor eating when captured and should always be released. Cast the baited rig out into the desired location and place the fishing outfit into a secure position. Larger outfits used with this rig are often too heavy for an angler to hold onto for extended periods of time. Reels need to be set to alarm an angler of a run and this can be easily achieved with overhead reels by engaging their ratchet.  Spin reels do not often have this luxury unless they are a bait runner variety and backing the reels drag down has proven to be a popular technique. The large sinker is designed to hold the hook into the jaw of the shark rather than allowing it to swallow the bait and become terminally injured. All the angler has to do now is set the hook!

Terminal tackle used

Swivel – Large sized 2/0 – 4/0 three way or cross line.

Hook – 2 x Large sized 9/0 to large sized 12/0 snelled tarpon, or chemically sharpened, thick gauge such as Mustad big gun‘s.

Hook Leader – Nylon coated or single strand wire 250 – 450lb breaking strain.

Sinker leader – Should be significantly lighter than the hook leader in case of snagging during battle.

Sinker – As heavy as possible, size 8 plus snapper or grapnel.

Foam – A section of single cell foam should be connected to the wire trace around 4 – 6 inches from the bait and allows the bait to enticingly waft around with a more natural appearance. This can be easily achieved by securely strapping the foam to the wire with heavy bait cotton.

Casting distance

0 – 50 meters, this rig casts best with larger, whole baits.
